Amid Gujarat Assembly polls, the state spokesperson of the Aam Aadmi Party and fake news peddler, Naresh Balyan, shared a video of Hardik Patel, the member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, on November 30, 2022, with a caption that read, “A big ruckus is going on inside the BJP before Gujarat elections. Hardik Patel swore on his “Kul Devta” that he would not vote for the BJP. They have tormented our people. They have killed people.”

In the 1 minute 7 seconds video, Hardik Patel can be heard saying, “I swear to my ancestral deity, to teach a lesson to those who have tormented me, mistreated me, and have arrogance and pride. I will not vote for the BJP. And, wherever my future is, I will vote for them. I will not vote even if someone in my family contests the election on a BJP ticket.”

Fact Check

In our research, using the keyword search “Hardik Patel swore to his Kul Devta to not vote for BJP,” we found a 18:02 minute video on VTV Gujarati News and Beyond uploaded on December 17, 2017. We found that the video is from a Bhavnagar rally in Gujarat. However, the VTV video was only 18 minutes and 2 seconds long. And the clip tweeted by Naresh Balyan was not in the video.

To watch the full video, using the keyword search “Hardik Patel 2017 rally in Bhavnagar,” we found another 41:57 minute-long video uploaded on YouTube by a channel named Army Patel. The video was uploaded four years ago. After watching the entire video, we found that around 40:17 in the video, Patel can be heard saying, “I swear to my ancestral deity that I will not vote for the BJP.”

The tweet shared by Naresh Balyan, claiming that Hardik Patel has swore not to vote for the BJP ahead of the Gujarat Assembly elections, is misleading and fake. The video shared by him is from 2017, when Hardik was a member of the Indian National Congress. He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party this year after leaving the Congress and is running for election on a BJP ticket from the Viramgam constituency in the district of Ahemdabad.
