Fact Check: Viral Claim About Thrissur MP Suresh Gopi Resigning from Ministerial Post is False

Yesterday, on June 9, Narendra Modi was sworn in for a third term as the Prime Minister of India. Alongside PM Modi, 72 ministers also took the oath of office. Among these ministers was Suresh Gopi, the lone BJP MP from Thrissur, Kerala. However, circulating on X (formerly Twitter) is the news that Suresh Gopi, sworn in as Minister of State on Sunday, is contemplating resigning from his ministerial role to return to his career in films.

Congress Kerala posted on X, “Actor and BJP MP Suresh Gopi took oath as MoS yesterday and portfolio is yet to be assigned. Today he wants to quit because he wants to do films! He is sure that leadership will relieve him soon. @BJP4India @narendramodi why this mockery of voters? Why don’t you tell your MP to first decide what he wants to do in life and most importantly stop this show in front of the media after taking oath in the name of God and the constitution.” (Archived link)

Journalist Deepak Sharma claimed, ‘Before the oath, Ajit Pawar turned down the offer and after taking the oath, BJP MP Suresh Gopi offered to resign. Obviously, no one leaves a ministerial post just like that. Anyway, the story of Pawar and Gopi has come out but the situation inside is even worse. The level of discontent in the BJP is such that Modiji has not been able to hold a separate meeting of the parliamentary party till now!’ (Archived link)

Propagandist Hansraj Meena asserted, “Suresh Gopi, the lone BJP MP from Kerala, took oath as a minister yesterday and is offering to resign today. Now they are saying that I will focus on films, I cannot handle this post. This is a cruel joke with the Constitution and democracy. Shameful.” (Archived link)

Fake news peddler and journalist Ranvijay Singh claimed, “A wonderful joke has been made. Yesterday BJP MP Suresh Gopi took oath as minister. Now they are talking about leaving the post.” (Archived link)

INC leader Arunesh Kumar Yadav stated, “brother you have made a wonderful Joke. Yesterday BJP MP Suresh Gopi took oath as a minister, and now he is talking about leaving the post!! It seems that Netaji did not get the right department.” (Archived link)

News 24 shared an infographic claiming, “As soon as he became a minister, Kerala BJP’s only MP Suresh Gopi offered to resign ◆ He said, “I did not ask for the ministerial post. I hope I will be relieved from the post soon.” (Archived link)

The same claim was also propagated by many other handles like journalist Prem Kumar (Archived link), journalist Govind Pratap Singh (Archived link) and Ashwini Soni.

In our fact-check research, we found a tweet by ANI Hindi, which shared a statement by Suresh Gopi, in which he said, “Today’s celebration is just a beginning… I did not expect to be included in the Council of Ministers… As an MP, I have to work to expand BJP in the South.” This tweet was shared yesterday evening after the oath ceremony concluded in Delhi.

Further, we found another tweet by CNBC-TV18 which stated that the BJP MP Suresh Gopi refuted reports of him seeking to be relieved of a ministerial role. Gopi in conversation with CNBC-TV18 said he has already accepted his Ministerial position and has been sworn in. He now awaits instructions to take charge of his Ministry.”

Suresh Gopi, from his X handle, also denied the reports of him seeking to be relieved of a ministerial role. Suresh wrote, “A few media platforms are spreading the incorrect news that I am going to resign from the Council of Ministers of the Modi Government. This is grossly incorrect.
