A tweet is being circulated by the (Middle-East) Arab Twitter account Screen Mix, claiming that the video in which the bride is seen crying and being taken away in a ‘palki’ is about a current incident of Sati-Pratha, a practice in Hinduism where a wife is forced to burn herself on her husband’s funeral pyre.
The first account which posted this video by attacking Hindu culture and tradition has written “Idgham, if her husband died, they bury her alive” – translated version of “عداتهم اذا مات زوجها يدفونها حية معه”.
Is it true that the viral video with the claim of Sati-Pratha practice is from India? Let’s Fact Check!

We started our research with the reverse image search of the keyframe of the viral video, the search result led us to the original owner of the clip who posted it on TikTok four days ago, the viral video belongs to “TikTok user” ‘laxu.sapkota’ from Nepal.

As Tik Tok is banned in India, through the VPN server we were able to access the video source. Both the videos are same but with different captions. The video on TikTok suggests that it is about the Marraige-Bidai ceremony in the Bajhang region, Nepal.
The video is about the procession of the Bidai ceremony of the Bride from her parent’s home in Doli. In Nepal, the ceremonies followed are somewhat identical to Hindu practices in India regarding marriage.
Bursting this fake claim by placing facts and evidence that this clip is not from India rather it’s from a wedding procession in Nepal. To state that the viral video is about the wife being buried and burnt alive and claiming it to be the practice of Sati-Pratha is straightforwardly a lie, which is done with malicious intention to demean the image of India globally.
Furthermore, to verify whether the Bidai ceremonies are performed in this particular manner or not as shown, we searched on YouTube and Google for marriage ceremonies in Nepal, and we found another video where the bride’s farewell ceremony is taking place in the same manner.
The misleading clip is about a ‘ceremony of marriage’ taking place in Nepal and not about a woman being burnt alive on a pyre, after the death of her husband. This is a blatant lie and is an attack on India and Hindu practices.
Claim | It was claimed that the ceremony shown in the clip was of Sati-Pratha from India. |
