Fact Check: No, the Bride is Not Nirmala Sitharaman’s Daughter, and She is not Sitting on the priest’s lap but on her Father’s Lap

In a troubling turn of events, social media has become a breeding ground for individuals seeking to defame and undermine the culture and traditions of others merely for personal gain or to propagate their own agendas. On June 9, 2023, a Twitter user by the name of Sakshi, who identifies herself as an Ambedkarite, shared a photograph depicting a wedding ceremony where the bride is seated on the lap of a man while her husband is adorning her with a necklace. Sakshi’s accompanying caption speculated whether this image was from the recent wedding of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s daughter. She further questions why the bride is sitting on the priest’s lap.

Up to this part, Sakshi’s intentions were unclear. the true intentions behind Sakshi’s post became evident as we delved into the comments section. What unfolded was a disturbing display of disrespect and derogatory remarks directed towards the Hindu religion, its traditions, and rituals. Commenting on the position of the priest’s hand in the image, Sakshi responded with a disdainful remark, suggesting that the priest was in a “romantic mood.”

This was followed by another comment where Sakshi insinuated that such customs might be related to intimacy, further mocking the Hindu rituals. These explicit comments and sarcastic replies unveiled a clear agenda of Sakshi—mocking and disparaging the Hindu customs and traditions, and spreading venomous sentiments against them.

A Twitter user with the handle name Just Ask, quotes Sakshi’s tweet and wrote, “I think it’s a blessing to have the priest’s erotic touch before the husband could have it,” clearly intending to mock Hindu rituals and customs.

Apart from this, another Twitter user by the name of Tahir Ishaq Nadvi quoted Sakshi’s tweet and wrote, “Wow, what a sacrament,” with an evident tone of mockery towards Hindu rituals and customs.

Fact Check

During our investigation, we decided to conduct a reverse image search on the viral picture to ascertain its authenticity. Our efforts led us to an intriguing report published by INSIDESPORT on June 9, 2023. The picture used in the report resembled the viral image, but slightly cropped. However, what caught our attention was the revelation about the identity of the groom in the picture. According to the report, the groom was none other than Prasidh Krishna, a cricketer and a pacer for the IPL team Rajasthan Royals. The report stated that Prasidh Krishna had recently tied the knot with his long-time partner, Rachana Krishna, in a traditional wedding ceremony.

Continuing our investigation, we stumbled upon an article on Wiki Bio that focused on the biography of Rachana Krishna, the wife of cricketer Prasidh Krishna. To our surprise, the picture used in this article was an exact match to the viral picture we had been examining. The article confirmed that the groom in the image was indeed Indian cricketer Prasidh Krishna, who had tied the knot with Rachana Krishna in a traditional South Indian wedding ceremony on June 8, 2023.

However, the most astonishing revelation came from the picture itself. According to Wiki Bio, the person on whose lap Rachana Krishna was sitting was not a priest, as initially speculated, but her own father. So, this means that she was not sitting on priest’s lap but her father’s lap.

Moreover, this discovery also directly contradicts the initial claim made by Sakshi on Twitter, where she speculated that the bride in the viral picture was the daughter of Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. This is because the name of the bride in the viral picture is Rachana, however the name of the FM Nirmala Sitharaman’s daughter is Parakala Vangmayi.

Continuing our investigation, we turned to Prasidh Krishna’s official Instagram handle for further insights. As we scrolled through his recent posts, we stumbled upon a series of pictures from his wedding ceremony. Among these pictures, to our surprise, was the exact same image that had gone viral on social media platforms.

Moreover, intrigued by the sight of Rachana Krishna sitting in her father’s lap during the wedding, we delved further into the customs and traditions of South Indian weddings. Our research led us to an enlightening article by ATC Wedding, which explored the significance of various rituals in these ceremonies. One particular ritual called Kanyadaan caught our attention. Kanyadaan, meaning ‘giving the bride away,’ involves a symbolic act where the bride sits on her father’s lap. In this ritual, the father passes his daughter to the groom as a precious gift, while also extracting a promise from the groom three times, affirming his commitment to accepting her as his lifelong companion.

So, all these points prove that the claims made by Sakshi and other Twitter handles regarding the identity of the bride in the picture and the context surrounding it are false and misleading. It is now clear that the bride in question is Rachana Krishna, and the groom is none other than Indian cricketer Prasidh Krishna. Furthermore, the revelation that the bride is sitting on her own father’s lap, as per the customs of a South Indian wedding ritual called Kanyadaan, dispels any notion of impropriety or involvement of a priest in the scene.
