The New Integrated Terminal Building at Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair was recently opened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

A few days after the airport’s inauguration, the Andaman Chronicle shared shared visuals on Twitter, claiming that the ceiling of the new airport had fallen.

Quoting, the Andaman Chronicle, Jairam Ramesh, a politician belonging to the Indian National Congress (INC), wrote, “The Prime Minister will inaugurate anything these days — even if it’s unfinished or substandard infrastructure (highways, airports, bridges, trains, etc). More than willing ministers anxious to boost their Sensex with him oblige. It’s the taxpayers and citizens who pay the cost. Such a sorry state of affairs in ‘New India’!”

Besides, the serial fake news peddler and the big time Hinduphobe, Ashok Swain, wrote “Modi had inaugurated this airport in Andaman, 5 days back naming it after Sorry Savarkar, it couldn’t withstand one rainfall.”

Fact Check

We did the keyword search “Ceiling collapsed at Veer Savarkar airport” and came across a report by India Today.

According to India Today report, at Veer Savarkar International Airport, a section of the false ceiling apparently fell off due to strong winds. The airport officials told PTI that the work of CCTV camera installation was currently underway. The wiring for these cameras has to be completed behind the panels. So, for that the false ceiling outside the terminal building, was loosened for the CCTV installation’s final alignment and adjustment.

Apart from that the statement from the Airports Authority of India (AAI), reads “On the night of July 22, there was a heavy wind, which uplifted the false ceiling from the bottom since the wind was not able to escape towards the ticket counter.”

It further says, “Around 10 sqm of false ceiling became dislocated, but the same has been rectified. The false ceiling inside the terminal building is intact, and no damage occurred to any of the installations inside the terminal.”

In addition, Jyotiraditya Scindia, the Aviation Minister, clarified that a portion of the false ceiling was purposefully left loose for CCTV work. Later, strong gusts led to the panels swaying. After the repair was done, the false ceiling was restored.

Therefore, considering the above facts, the claim that the false ceiling collapsed due to incomplete construction and weak infrastructure is misleading. CCTV installation work was going on and false ceiling was loosened for installation work. But in between strong wind and rain came, due to which the roof fell.
