The “Gujarat model” has been a topic of both admiration and controversy in India. Ever since Narendra Modi’s tenure as Chief Minister, Gujarat has witnessed significant development and transformation, leading to a sharp rise in its prominence. However, this transformation of Gujarat over the years has still not been digested by the leftists in India. On May 19, 2023, a Twitter handle named Брат shared a picture attempting to depict a dire situation in Gujarat. The photo portrays a man drying his clothes on wires that appear to be electrical wires, but the caption accompanying it suggests that this represents the state of electricity in Gujarat.
So, is it true that the picture shared by Брат shows the dire condition of electricity in Gujarat? Let’s Fact Check.

Fact Check
During our investigation, we conducted a reverse image search of the picture shared by Брат to ascertain its origin and authenticity. To our surprise, we stumbled upon a report published on June 5, 2015, by the Hindi news media website india.com, which featured an identical image. The reality revealed in this report left us astounded. According to the India report, the photograph captured a stark reality in Uttar Pradesh—a state where people had placed their hopes in Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party, granting them an absolute majority in the 2012 elections, with the expectation that their standard of living would improve significantly.
However, the report painted a different picture altogether. It highlighted that the promised “good days” seemed to materialize solely for the leaders and activists of the Samajwadi Party, while the general populace continued to face immense challenges. The photograph symbolized the frustration and disappointment of the people who had anticipated the provision of electricity in their province upon the party’s ascension to power, only to be left disillusioned.
According to the report’s findings, numerous districts in Uttar Pradesh boasted electric poles, giving the impression of an existing power infrastructure. However, the harsh reality was that electricity remained elusive for most of these regions. The confidence displayed by the man in the image, resorting to drying his clothes on electric wires, portrayed the grim certainty held by the local population that electricity would never reach their doorstep.
Furthermore, in addition to the previously mentioned report, we came across a tweet by BJP MLA Dr. Shalabh Mani Tripathi on January 20, 2022. The tweet featured the same picture shared by Брат, accompanied by a caption that read, “Where once clothes used to dry on electric wires, the same state has started providing electricity even to Congress-ruled states in just 5 years. The difference is very clear!”
Dr. Shalabh Mani Tripathi’s tweet added another layer to the narrative surrounding the image. By comparing the past state of affairs, where clothes were forced to be dried on electric wires, with the current situation, he implied a significant transformation in the state’s electricity provision under the leadership of CM Yogi Adityanath. The tweet seemed to convey a sense of pride in the progress made under BJP rule, highlighting the contrasting outcomes between the past and the present.
Therefore, based on the evidence presented, it is clear that the picture shared by Брат does not represent the state of Gujarat or reflect the Gujarat model as claimed. Instead, the photograph captures a scene from Uttar Pradesh during the tenure of Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party.
