On February 4, 2023, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav tweeted a video with the caption, “This is a new form of harassment. The BJP government cut off Mainpuri villages electricity because they didn’t vote for the ruling party. Moreover, there has been no electricity for 15 days. The people of UP are facing political discrimination, and justice shall prevail.”
In the video, an elderly person is heard saying that they are being told they used to vote for the BJP. But now they have voted for Dimple Yadav. They should go and ask for electricity from her. Dimple Yadav has assured them she will talk about the issue with the DM. They even called a private electrician for the repair, but officials disconnected it the next day.
Another news portal, Bharat Samachar, which favors the Samajwadi Party, tweeted that electricity in Mainpuri villages was cut off because they voted for Dimple Yadav.

Dimple Yadav is a Member of Parliament from Mainpuri. She won the Mainpuri constituency in 2022. By-election after Mulayam Singh Yadav’s seat fell vacant due to illness. She defeated BJP candidate Raghuraj Singh Shakya by 2.88 lakh votes.
However, the Mainpuri constituency has been a safe seat for the Samajwadi Party since 1996, and never has a BJP candidate won from Manipuri Lok Sabha. So the first claim by an elderly person that they used to vote for the BJP but now votes for Dimple Yadav is misleading.
To verify other claims made in the video, we googled the news reports with the keyword “power cut in Bharapur village” in Hindi and English. We found several media reports in Hindi, and alongside them we found the statement from officials of the electricity department.
As informed by the senior engineer, Ravi Pratap, the power is off due to non-payment of electricity bills. However, 50% of the amounts due will be paid, and they will restore electricity.
The Bharapur village is not the only village that is facing a power outage in Mainpuri. As per the Live Hindustan report, five other villages in Mainpuri are facing a power cut due to non-payment of electricity bills. A total of Rs 63 lakhs is due and 32 people have been registered at FIR.
Moreover, Mainpuri is not the only constituency where the electricity department has taken such action. Such action has been taken in BJP constituencies such as Lucknow, Gonda, Unnao, farrukhabad, Ikauna as well.
So, there is no political discrimination, and the law of the state is equally applicable to all citizens. Hence, the claim by Akhilesh Yadav and Bharat Samachar is misleading.
