Does the BJP government have any role in the suspension of AIFF?

Due to “undue influence from third parties,” FIFA on Tuesday suspended the All India Football Federation (AIFF). In addition, the nation lost its chance to host the under-17 Women’s World Cup in 2022, which is slated to take place in October.

Two conditions have been set forward by FIFA in order to relieve the AIFF’s ban. They won’t withdraw the prohibition until the CoA mandate has been “completely repealed” and the AIFF administration is “totally in command” of the organization’s day-to-day operations.

The opposition began targeting the BJP government as soon as the news was made public that FIFA had suspended the AIFF on August 15.

On August 16, 2022, a day after the suspension of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) was announced, the Congress Twitter account made a tweet about it and questioned who these third parties were. The INC government raised a question, “Will Modi or his party answer?,” in an attempt to indicate that the BJP government was responsible for the suspension of AIFF.

Fact Check

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has been suspended by FIFA with immediate effect for “undue influence from third parties,” the international soccer’s governing body announced on Monday. Additionally, because of the ban, India would not be able to host the Under-17 Women’s World Cup as planned from October 11 to October 30.

In our research, we established that as per the report of The Indian Express in May, the Indian Supreme Court dissolved the AIFF and set a three-member committee to oversee the sport, rewrite the AIFF’s charter, and hold elections that had been postponed for 18 months.

In response, FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation sent a delegation led by AFC general secretary Windsor John to meet with Indian football stakeholders and laid out a timeline for the AIFF to alter its constitution by the end of July and then by September 15 finish elections.

Role of Praful Patel

FIFA is strictly against the third party interference. Earlier, CoA created an advisory council comprising 12 familiar faces. That council was immediately disbanded.

According to the Organiser report, the Supreme Court removed Praful Patel as president of the AIFF earlier this year in May, citing the failure to hold elections that were scheduled for December 2020 as the cause. The AIFF’s business was subsequently put under the control of a three-person Committee of Administrators (CoA), led by a former judge named AR Dave. The other two members are former Indian football captain Bhaskar Ganguly and former chief election commissioner S Y Qureshi.

Further, the CoA was instructed to prepare the electoral college in order to hold the proposed Executive Committee elections in compliance with Constitutional principles, subject to future court instructions.

While the CoA was preparing for the election, a week ago, the CoA had obtained evidence that AIFF ex-chief Praful Patel was back in the picture. Patel had held meetings with 35 members associations of the country with the express purpose of interfering with the proceedings of the Supreme Court.

Sources claimed that CoA had earlier in the week accused Patel of orchestrating letters from FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) threatening a ban on India. We saw a FIFA suspension within a week.

The political background of Praful Patel

According to the information available on Praful Patel NCP, Praful Patel is a Nationalist Congress Party member. He serves as the NCP’s general secretary, the party’s deputy leader in parliament, the chairman of the party’s discipline committee, and the representative for Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and the North East States.

His father, Manoharbhai Patel, was a representative for the Maharashtra Gondia Bhandara districts for the Indian National Congress party.

Conclusion

According to the information we established in our research, the suspension of AIFF by FIFA has nothing to do with the BJP. We even looked into Praful Patel’s political history to see whether he had any connections to the BJP, it came out that he was a member of the NCP. The effort by the Congress Twitter account to include the BJP in the suspension of the AIFF is completely ludicrous.
