In a customary occurrence, the Gujarat secondary and higher secondary boards recently declared the outcomes of the class 10th examination, aligning with the annual practice followed by state boards nationwide. However, the release of Gujarat’s class 10th exam results took an unfortunate turn when an article in the DNA newspaper featured a headline that read, “157 schools record zero pass percentage in Class 10.”
Undoubtedly, the headline carried a disheartening tone. Yet it did not deter Prashant Bhusan, known for his critical views towards India, from mocking the state of Gujarat.
Prashant Bhushan wrote, “Looks like the Gujarat model is preparing to make a lot of Chaiwalas! Pathetic”
While quoting the DNA report, a few other Congress party flunkeys took a jibe at the Gujarat board result.
Vijay Thotthalli wrote, “Modi’s famous Gujarat Model.”
Aaj Tak also reported with a similar headline to DNA, “All students failed in 157 students.”
As responsible consumers of news, it is our duty to delve deeper into the veracity of such assertions and separate fact from fiction. In this fact-checking article, we will closely examine the DNA report and explore the actual ground reality surrounding the Class 10th results in Gujarat. By analyzing official data and credible sources, we aim to shed light on the accuracy of the claim made by DNA and Aajtak and provide readers with a clear understanding of the situation at hand.

Fact Check
Our investigative process commenced with a meticulous examination of the DNA article, leaving no stone unturned in our quest for comprehensive analysis. After carefully analyzing the DNA article, we stumbled upon the subheadline of the article that said, “ Gujarat Board Class 10 Results: Out of 165690 students who appeared for the exams, only 27446 passed.”
Later in the report, “The overall pass percentage of Gujarat Board for Class 10 is 64.62 percent.” This is mathematically inaccurate. Because if, out of 165690 students, only 27446 passed, then the passing percentage would have been around 16 percent.
Nonetheless, later in the report, DNA quoted Aajtak as writing, “Out of 165690 students who re-appeared for the exams, only 27446 passed.”
However, the underlying motive behind the fallacious data became apparent through the subheadline, indicating that the editor of the report possessed prior knowledge of the accurate figures but deliberately misrepresented them in the subheadline, seemingly to generate sensationalized and attention-seeking content.
We began our investigation by looking at different news articles with the same content. The Indian Express has reported all the pertinent details, needed to debunk the DNA report.
The Indian Express reported, “Out of the 73,4898 regular students, 47,4893 cleared the Class 10 examination held in March.”
The report further said, “The Class 10 result of the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board(GSHSEB) declared Thursday recorded a pass percentage of 64.62 per cent.”
If we examine this data mathematically, we will find that the passing percentage is exactly 64.62.
Later, the Indian Express reported, “The number of schools with a 100 per cent pass percentage declined from 294 the previous year to 272 this year, while schools with no one passing the exams increased from 121 to 157 within a year.”
It means that there are 272 schools where the pass percentage is 100 percent. And there are 157 schools where zero students have passed the 10th-grade exam.
Consequently, the DNA chose to report only to the latter part, while deliberately omitting the first and important part of the fact.
In spite of that, to further substantiate our findings, we started looking at other news reports on relevant topics.
The Times of India reported, “This year the number of schools getting 100% results was 272 which was 294 in 2022.”
News 18 reported, “In Gujarat, as many as 272 schools have received 100 percent results.”
Upon meticulous investigation, it has come to light that the DNA and Aaj Tak report’s claim of zero pass percentage in 157 schools is selective. Contrary to this assertion, official records reveal that in a significant number of schools, the pass percentage was indeed 100%. In fact, in a total of 272 schools across Gujarat, every single student successfully cleared the Class 10th examinations.
