Detailed Report: The truth behind the 400% fee hike at Allahabad University

Since last week, students at Allahabad University have been protesting over the 400 percent fee hike. Leader of the All-India Congress Committee Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had argued in favor of the protest and wrote in a tweet “Students from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, whose families make meager incomes, attend the institution. The government would deprive these youths of a significant source of education by raising the fees.”

She urged the Bharatiya Janata Party government to immediately revoke the “Anti-Youth” decision.

On September 13, 2022, Akhilesh Yadav, the former CM of Uttar Pradesh and leader of the Samajwadi Party, extended his support to the demonstrators by stating that “The student’s protest against the 400% fee hike is the symbol of hopelessness from the BJP government”

Our team conducted research to verify the claim. Further probing the matter, we came across the report by Indian Express. As per the report, Jaya Kapoor, Public Relations Officer of The Allahabad University, said that the fee hike was undertaken after 110 years. In adding to it, she said that “The fee hike, which has been approved by the Executive Council, the highest body, after many long deliberations would not apply to any of the current students. It would apply to the fresh entrants from the 2022-23 academic session.”

She continued by saying that there were several instances when a monthly tuition fee of Rs. 12/month was being charged. With the New Education Policy, the government had asked us to cater our own resources, while new courses are being introduced, new instructors have been employed and with outdated framework it cannot be maintained.

After digging more into the matter, we encountered the report in Hindustan Times. According to the report, the Public Relations Officer of Allahabad University, Prof Jaya Kapoor stated that Allahabad University is facing the shortage of funds for past many years just like other universities but abstained from raising the fees before. As per the government order, the university should decrease its dependency on government funds and should generate funds of its own for the renovation and maintenance work of the campus.

She further added that “By increasing the fees almost to the equal level of other central universities, still the fees are lower in comparison to the other Central Universities. For example, the science student undergraduate course fee is the lowest (Rs.4,151 per year) among all other Central Universities. Likewise, even after the hike of the fees, other courses fees will remain lowest in comparison to other Central Universities.” Furthermore, she said that “So-called student leaders are protesting for the sake of gaining cheap publicity and limelight by grabbing the attention in the headlines, which would open an easy door for them in the politics”

As per the aforementioned information, the fee increase will only apply to new students beginning with the academic year 2022–2023 and not applicable to current university students. As a result, the previously levied tuition cost of Rs 12 per month has increased now to Rs 50–60 per month.

Hence, the claim made by All India Congress Committee leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and former CM of Uttar Pradesh Akhilesh Yadav is misleading with intended to deceive the public.
