Pakistani social media users recently shared a video showcasing protests in Ladakh, an Indian Himalayan Union Territory. The accompanying assertions from these users suggest that the residents of Ladakh aspire for freedom from India, as evidenced by their notable participation in the street demonstrations. Nestled in the eastern part of Kashmir, Ladakh, a region marked by ongoing conflicts between India and China, continues to attract global attention.
Waseem Adam Khan Marwat tweeted, ‘Ladakh wants freedom from India. Ladakh coming to streets against Indian occupation !’
Pakistan-based X account, The Intel Consortium wrote, ‘Ladakh witnesses massive protest, demands freedom from “Modi Regime” Indian Government.’
Separatist leader from Jammu and Kashmir, Imran Kazi wrote, ‘Protests against the Indian government were held in Ladakh in which protests against the Indian government and Ladakh is not part of India but a part of Jammu and Kashmir echoed with slogans of freedom from India Mahmood Indian media is not showing all this.’

Our fact-checking procedure started by conducting a reverse image search of a key frame from the viral video, ultimately leading us to the India Today news portal. According to India Today, extensive protest rallies unfolded in the Leh district of Ladakh, marked by a comprehensive shutdown as residents emphasized their four key demands – the attainment of statehood for Ladakh, the inclusion of Ladakh in the sixth schedule of the Constitution to accord it tribal status, job reservations for locals, and the allocation of a parliamentary seat for both Leh and Kargil.
India Today further reported, ‘The shutdown in the region was called by the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), which, on January 23, submitted a memorandum to the Union Home Ministry, demanding statehood for Ladakh, and status under the Sixth Schedule.’
Moreover, The Hindu reported, ‘The LAB and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), representing the Buddhist majority and Shia Muslim dominated regions respectively, are jointly protesting for Statehood for Ladakh, the inclusion of Ladakh in the sixth schedule of the constitution, thus giving it a tribal status, job reservation for locals and a parliamentary seat each for Leh and Kargil.’
Amid the ongoing situation, the Central Government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, remains steadfast in seeking resolutions. Addressing the concerns and requests of the people of Ladakh, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has established a high-powered committee. Chaired by Minister of State (Home) Nityanand Rai, the committee convened its inaugural session on December 4 of the previous year, with the subsequent meeting slated for February 19.
The significant event of August 5, 2019, witnessed the abrogation of Article 370, granting special status to Jammu and Kashmir. Concurrently, the BJP government at the Centre orchestrated the bifurcation of the state into Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh, designating each part as a Union Territory.
In summary, Pakistani social media users are disseminating misleading information with the apparent aim of sowing confusion and unrest in India. Contrary to their assertions, the ongoing protests in Ladakh centre around the demand for statehood, among other considerations.
