Claims of Trump Snubbing PM Modi Are Misleading, Both Leaders Share Warm Relations

On January 20, 2025, Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th President of the United States during a historic inauguration ceremony. The ceremony took place at the West Front of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. Many world leaders took to X to congratulate Donald Trump on his inauguration as the 47th President of the United States. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended his wishes on X.

Meanwhile, some social media users have ridiculed Modi, pointing out that Trump did not acknowledge Modi’s congratulatory tweet. The X handle Ritu Rathaur asserted, “It’s tragic and humiliating that even after three days Modi sirs dear friend Trump did not reply to his congratulatory tweet. He did not invite our PM for his oath taking , the least Trump could have done is reply to this tweet !! But he didn’t! I strongly condemn this act of digital snubbery!” (Archived link)

M. Nageshwar Rao wrote, “Mr Donald J. Trump, It has been 3 days since Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated you upon your becoming the 47th President of US. As he claims you as his “dear friend”, in the interest of his good health who may be having sleepless nights since you did not invite him to #TrumpInauguration2025, at least acknowledge his congratulatory post if not thank him for that. Elon Bhai, hamra Modi ji bhaichara mein vishwas karte hain. Galti toh hote hi rahte hain. Aap Trump bhai ko bolo na itna ziddi mat rakhne ka.” (Archived link)

One user stated, “Trump has still not acknowledged this tweet. Maybe this is why, Modi is trying to impress, They all stood along the streets waving flags did garba when he arrived in US, so Modi is returning the favour, most are Gujjus.” (Archived link)

Fact Check

We began our fact-checking research by scrutinizing Donald Trump’s X profile. We observed that Donald Trump has not retweeted or extended his gratitude to any world leader’s congratulatory tweet since his inauguration on January 20. Following the inaugural ceremony, Trump only retweeted one tweet from his wife, Melania, on January 20. Apart from that, he has posted some videos related to his inauguration ceremony.

Many leaders, including Ukraine’s President Zelensky, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the UK’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban, congratulated Trump on X, with some of the leaders sharing their wishes through video messages. However, Trump did not engage in direct interactions with these leaders or express his gratitude to them.

World leaders congratulating Trump

Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who was also present at Trump’s inaugural ceremony, also wished him with a lengthy message on Twitter. However, Trump has not expressed thanks for her tweet either.

We found that Trump is not very active on his X handle. On November 6, when the results of the US elections were announced, in which the Republican Party won, leaders from around the world like Ukraine’s President Zelensky, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, France’s President Emmanuel Macron, El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele, and many other world leaders including PM Modi, congratulated Trump on his victory via X. However, even then Trump did not engage with any of these leaders.

Additionally, Jeff Bezos, the Executive Chairman of Amazon, who was invited by Trump to the inauguration ceremony, also congratulated him on being elected as the President of the United States. Furthermore, Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, who was actively involved in Trump’s online campaign throughout the election, also made several tweets on Trump’s victory. However, Trump didn’t engage with these tweets either, despite the high-profile figures involved and their prominent support during his campaign.

The claim that U.S. President Donald Trump has been giving a cold shoulder to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is unfounded. This narrative stems from the narrow perception that Trump did not respond to Modi’s congratulatory message on X. However, the fact is that Trump has not been actively engaging in one-on-one interactions on social media. Notably, after the November 6 election results, then President-elect Trump had a phone conversation with PM Modi, during which he warmly greeted him, referring to him as a “magnificent man.” He also mentioned that Modi was among the first global leaders he spoke with after his victory.

ConclusionThe claim is misleading, as since Trump’s victory on November 6, 2024, and his inauguration on January 20, 2025, he has not actively engaged in one-on-one interactions with any world leaders who congratulated him on being elected the 47th President of the United States.
