Fact Check
We began our fact-checking process by conducting a relevant Google search. During our search, we found an article published by United News of India on February 3, 2025. The article stated, “In a novel initiative to enhance law enforcement efficiency and sustainability, ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India), under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative ‘Project Green,’ handed over 25 self-balancing e-bikes to the Surat City and District Police. The handover ceremony was attended by Hon’ble Minister of State for Home, Harshbhai Sanghavi.”

The article further highlighted that these self-balancing e-bikes aim to revolutionize police patrolling, especially in areas where four-wheelers face accessibility challenges, such as narrow streets, busy marketplaces, and event venues. These e-bikes are expected to improve police mobility, enhance response times, and boost crime prevention efforts.
During the event, Harshbhai Sanghavi said, “The introduction of self-balancing e-bikes is a big step towards smart policing. In densely crowded areas like market zones and public spaces, traditional police vehicles face mobility constraints. These e-bikes will enhance patrolling efficiency while also promoting environmental conservation. I appreciate AM/NS India for their commitment to sustainability and congratulate Surat Police on this forward-thinking initiative.”
Additionally, we found supporting articles from Ahmedabad Mirror and First India confirming that the e-scooters were manufactured by ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) under its CSR initiative ‘Project Green’.
Furthermore, a social media post by Harshbhai Sanghavi on February 3, 2025, reads, “Empowering safety with innovation! NewAgePolicing. 25 new self-balancing e-scooters added to our fleet. Grateful for AMNS India’s contribution to our green initiatives.”
To further verify the claim, we checked the ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India website, which states, “AM/NS India is a joint venture between the world’s leading steel companies, ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel. Established in December 2019, post-acquisition of Essar Steel, we are an integrated flat steel manufacturer—from iron ore to ready-to-market products. With over 600 steel grades, we serve industries such as agriculture, automotive, infrastructure, defence, and energy, contributing to an Aatmanirbhar Bharat.”

Moreover, our investigation confirmed that ArcelorMittal S.A. is a Luxembourg-based multinational steel corporation headquartered in Luxembourg City, while Nippon Steel is a Japan-based steel company.
Hence, the claim that Gujarat Minister Harsh Sanghavi and Surat Police were riding Chinese-made e-scooters is false. The fact is that the e-scooters were built by ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) under its CSR initiative ‘Project Green’, making them Indian-manufactured vehicles and not Chinese imports.
