Claim of Tiger Roby Being Beaten During Match is Misleading

The 2nd Test match between India and Bangladesh commenced at Kanpur’s Green Park Stadium, following India’s win in the first match. Meanwhile, a video is going viral on X, claiming that Bangladesh cricket team’s ‘super fan,’ Tiger Roby, was allegedly beaten up by some people during the second Test match. He suffered injuries and was taken to the hospital by the police.

The supporter of Samajwadi party, Surya Samajwadi tweeted, “A supporter of the Bangladesh team was killed during a match being played in Kanpur If there is no system to conduct safe matches then why do you organize matches? India’s image is getting tarnished because of BJP supported goons.”

Saba Khan wrote, “Bangladeshi cricket fan Tiger Robi claims he was beaten by a group of 15 mob beat him brutally during India vs Bangladesh 2nd test match at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur today. Robi claims he was being teased by the men for supporting his team and was beaten during lunch break.”

Handle Tamjidul Hoque wrote, “Bangladeshi Cricket Fan known as “Tiger Robi” has been reportedly attacked in India during the Bangladesh-india test match. He reportedly lost consciousness after being injured in the head.”

Another handle MJ wrote, “Bangladeshi kanglu fan Tiger Roby, a known jihadi & Hindu hater was shown his aukaat by the Kanpur cricket crowd today. He abused Mohammad Siraj from the boundary line. This jihadi also shouted India is enemy in Chennai. Now the entire 786 jamaat, Indian seculars & Bangladesh ke jihadis will play victim card & curse Modi-Yogi.”

Other handles, such as Anil Yadav, and Dushyant Kumar, also made the same claim.

Fact Check

In our fact-check research, we found a statement issued by the Kanpur police, in which ACP Kalyanpur Abhishek Pandey, speaking on the matter of Bangladeshi fan Tiger Roby refuted the claims of attack. He said: “During the cricket match between India and Bangladesh today, a spectator named Tiger suddenly fell ill. When his condition deteriorated, police personnel at the scene lifted him and provided medical assistance. He has since recovered, and a liaison officer has been assigned to ensure he receives immediate help if needed. There were rumors of a fight, but these are completely baseless; no such incident occurred. The cause of his injury was identified during conversations and is unrelated to any altercation.”

Apart from the police statement, a report was published by Amar Ujala, according to which Tiger boosted the morale of his team by waving the Bangladesh flag from the C-balcony. However, the front part of the C-gallery was closed because permission had not been granted by the PWD to seat spectators in that section. Despite this, Tiger went to the front and started waving his country’s flag. The flag fell into the C-stall gallery, after which the police personnel asked him to step back. He refused and said some inappropriate things to them. As a result, the bouncers grabbed him and began pulling him back. During this, there was some pushing and shoving. Tiger then fell to the ground and accused the bouncers and Indian fans of beating him. Despite multiple attempts to help him up, he refused to get up and claimed that he was unwell.

Moreover, the report by Dainik Jagran stated that Tiger has come to India on a medical visa. He is suffering from tuberculosis. A CCTV footage has also surfaced in which he is seen walking in on his foot. After that, he sits down, and no one is seen beating him.

Also, a video of Tiger Roby has surfaced in which he stated that a supporter of the Bangladesh cricket team was admitted to the hospital after his health deteriorated during the India-Bangladesh second Test match. He said, “My health deteriorated, and the police brought me to the hospital, where I am undergoing treatment.”

Hence, the claim that Tiger Roby was beaten by some people during the match, causing his injuries and leading to his hospitalization, is misleading. Tiger is a TB patient, and CCTV footage shows him walking before suddenly sitting down due to ill health. After this, he was taken to the hospital.
