Claim of Stones Pelted on Muslims During Prayers in Ahmedabad is Misleading

A video is going viral on social media in which a man wearing a skullcap claims that in Vatva, Ahmedabad, Hindus wear masks, throw stones at Muslims during Ramadan, and force them to chant slogans at knifepoint. He alleges that this has been happening every year. He further states that a complaint was filed against the accused, but the police did not disclose their names. He describes this as a gross injustice against the Muslim community.

The case is from Vatva in Ahmedabad.’

Fact Check

We began our fact-checking process by conducting a Google search. During our search, we found a tweet shared by DCP Zone-6 Ahmedabad City. The tweet reads, “Last night, there was an incident of mutual quarrel over taking a car in Vatwa area, in which a crime was registered on the complaint of the complainant and the accused were immediately arrested. Also, precautionary measures are being taken against those who spread false information about this incident.”

Additionally, we found a PDF of the FIR related to the incident. The complaint states, ‘My name is Faiz Mohammad, son of Javed Akhtar, aged 23, belonging to the Sheikh community. I work and reside at M.N. 96, Yakubbhai’s Well, near Navapura Sharivaya Cemetery, Vatva, Ahmedabad City. I am personally present here to file my complaint and state the truth. I live at the above-mentioned address with my family and earn a livelihood by working at a garage named ‘Ahmedabad Motors,’ owned by Taufiqbhai Saiyed, located near Shankheshwar Estate. My family consists of my mother, Sairabanu, and my two brothers. My eldest brother is named Shoaib, my second brother is Shah Rukh, and I am the youngest.

On the night of 03/03/2025, at approximately 1:30–2:00 AM, I left my house and went to Meera Café, located near Sharivaya Cemetery, to smoke a cigarette. While I was standing there, Sunil and his brother Amit, who reside in Chunara Vas, Vatva, along with their friends, approached me and asked where Ajju Kana’s house was, claiming that he had taken their vehicle. Since I frequently pass by Chunara Vas, I am familiar with Sunil and Amit, so I showed them Ajju Kana’s house. However, I have no knowledge of any dispute between Sunil, Amit, and Ajju Kana.

The FIR further states, ‘Later, on the same day at around 12:30 AM, I was passing through the road in front of Chunara Vas when Amit Chunara, Sunil Chunara, and Chandu Bhai stopped me. They accused me of taking their vehicle and warned me not to pass through that area again. They suspected that I was involved in their dispute with Ajju Kana. They then started arguing with me, hurled abusive language, and threatened to kill me.’

‘During the altercation, Amit Chunara picked up a brick from the ground and hit me on my right thigh. As people from the surrounding area started gathering, they fled from the spot. Later, I came to know that Sunil, Amit, and Chandu Bhai had also fought with Hasan Mohammad, a resident of our neighborhood, before attacking me. They had similarly assaulted him, with Sunil and Amit striking him on the head with a brick. This complaint is based on the true and accurate account of events as per my statement.’

Therefore, the claim that the incident in Vatva, Ahmedabad, had a religious angle is false. The complaint clearly indicates that the altercation occurred due to a dispute over a vehicle and had no religious aspect.
