Recently, shocking claim about 35 unmarried girls becoming pregnant in a single district in Uttar Pradesh has been making rounds on social media. This news has quickly gained attention and evoked mixed reactions from the public. Amidst this, a graphic from ABP News reporting this story is going viral on X with a misleading headline that reads, “More than 35 unmarried girls got pregnant in this village of UP! Family members were shocked.”
Karishma Aziz, sharing the graphic, wrote, “And they say that our culture… well! All this is natural in a society where there is opposition to the burqa and hijab!”
Ali Sohrab asserted, “I will not say… These rituals, these vows, these relationships… I will not say…”
Journalist Musaib Siddiqui wrote, “A shocking incident has come to light from Varanasi in UP. In Ramna village of Daasar district, there has been a stir after more than 35 girls were declared pregnant. The congratulatory messages received on mobile on the occasion of Diwali shocked these girls. It also shocked their relatives.”
Another user Dharamveer wrote, “A shocking case has come to light from Varanasi in UP. In fact, there has been a stir in the Ramna village of the district after more than 35 girls were declared pregnant.”

In our fact-check research, we conducted a keyword search on Google and found the same media report by ABP News. According to the report, in Ramna village of Varanasi, this error occurred due to departmental negligence.
The Anganwadi worker was responsible for various duties, including nutritional programs for pregnant women and children, as well as acting as a Booth Level Officer (BLO). For the purpose of a scheme, Anganwadi workers were going from house to house, collecting Aadhaar cards and forms from rural family members.
While collecting the forms, the Anganwadi workers mistakenly mixed up both forms, including the Aadhaar numbers. Following this, registration was completed on the same Aadhaar number, after which the girls received messages indicating that they were registered as pregnant women. They received this information via mobile messages from the Ministry of Women and Child Development during Diwali.
The department immediately took cognizance of the matter, and the data was deleted even before a complaint was made.
In summary, the claim that 35 unmarried girls from a single village in Varanasi became pregnant is untrue. This misinformation stemmed from administrative mistakes: due to departmental errors, 40 unmarried girls were incorrectly listed on a portal meant for pregnant women. As a result, they received messages from the Ministry of Women and Child Development during Diwali.
