Claim Linking IPS Abhishek Tiwari’s Resignation to UGC Protests Is Misleading

In January 2026, the University Grants Commission (UGC) enacted a new law called the “Promoting Equity in Higher Education Institutions Regulations.” Its purpose is to prevent caste-based and other discrimination in colleges and universities. Institutions that fail to follow the guidelines could face penalties. Consequently, many upper-caste students are protesting this law, citing concerns such as its lack of protection against false or inaccurate complaints and its potential for misuse. Meanwhile, a claim is being made on social media that Sagar SP, IPS Abhishek Tiwari has resigned from his post in protest against the law.

The handle Yati Sharma wrote, “In protest against UGC, Sagar SP IPS officer Mr. Abhishek Tiwari has resigned from his job. This is the kind of thing politicians should have done. Those politicians should drown themselves in a handful of water.” (Archived link)

Another handle Pankaj Dhavraiyya stated, “In protest against UGC, Sagar SP IPS officer Abhishek Tiwari ji has resigned from his job. This is the kind of thing that politicians should have done. But politicians are traitors, so why would they do it. Comrades, we must make India free of BJP.” (Archived link)

The claim was also shared by other handles such as Neha Das (Archived link), Anuj Agnihotri (Archived link), and Shivam Mishra (Archived link).
