The movement in Bangladesh against the anti-reservation quota took a terrible turn when the protest became violent, leading to severe clashes. Amidst this unrest, minority Hindus are being killed by Islamic extremists, with reports of their houses and shops being set on fire. Meanwhile, a video has surfaced on social media showing a mob attacking a woman with a stick. This video is being shared with the claim that a Bangladeshi Hindu mob attacked a Hijabi Muslim woman. An attempt is being made to create communal tension through this video.

Fact Check

To verify the video and the viral claim, we extracted various keyframes from the video and performed a reverse image search. The reverse image search led us to the viral video posted on the Facebook profile of Belal Hossain on August 2, 2024. The video was accompanied by a caption in Bengali. When translated into English, the caption reads, “I am speechless, silent, and seeing what I should see. Students were attacked by cadre forces of Chhatra League, Youth League, and Awami League in Narsingdi Upazila Mor.”

We took hints from this Facebook post and used related keyword search on Google. This led us to a Bangladesh media website, Ajker Bangladesh, where the people seen in the viral video are also featured in a report published on August 2. According to this report, “In Bangladesh’s Narsingdi, students participating in the ongoing movement against the reservation system were attacked by members of the Student League and Youth League. At least 10 protesters were injured in this attack.” Commenting on the incident, Officer-in-Charge of Narsingdi Sadar Police Station, Tanvir Ahmed, said, “There was a minor clash between the Student League and the protesters.”

Conclusion: The investigation makes it clear that there is no communal angle to the incident. Students in Narsingdi, Bangladesh, were protesting against the reservation quota system (anti-discrimination movement) when they were attacked by members of the Chhatra League, the student wing of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s political party, the Awami League.
