Fact Check
In our fact-check research, we conducted a reverse image search of the viral picture, which led us to Manavjamin, a Bengali media website. After translating the article into English, we found that it was titled ‘19 Dangerous Bridges in Amtali, Lakhs of People in Fear.’ In the article, we spotted a similar picture. It was determined that the bridge is located in the Amtali sub-district of Barguna district in Bangladesh.
We found another article on a website named BTC News titled ‘26 Unrepairable Iron Bridges in Seven Unions in Barguna.’ The article states that the Amtali Upazila Engineering Department has identified 26 iron bridges in seven unions of Amtali Upazila in Barguna as unrepairable and high-risk. Cracks have appeared in many of the bridges across different canals in the Gulishakhali, Kukua, Athargachia, Haldia, Chawra, Amtali Sadar, and Arpangashia Unions of the upazila.
These bridges were constructed between from 2002-03 fiscal year to 2005-06 fiscal year under the Light Vehicle Project. The residents have demanded an immediate halt to vehicle movement on the bridge and have called for the construction of a new one.
According to another article by the Daily Observer, the bridge in the viral picture is over the Jugia Khal (canal) at Arpangashia Union in the upazila. It is in very poor condition and could collapse at any time, disrupting communication between the Union Parishad and Upazila town. The 40-meter bridge was constructed for Tk 22 lakh in 2000. Since its construction, the bridge has not been repaired.
Conclusion: The viral image falsely claimed to be from India, is actually located in Bangladesh.
