Amit Shah Advocates for Indian Languages, Not Imposition of Hindi

A post by ANI quoting Indian Home Minister Amit Shah is going viral on X. The quote reads, “Those who speak English in the country will soon feel ashamed; the creation of such a society is not far away.” Social media users are sharing the image and video, claiming that Amit Shah is pushing for the imposition of Hindi at the expense of other Indian languages. The posts appear to be aimed at fueling a language war between Hindi and regional languages.

Congress Kerala claimed, ‘So, everyone has to speak Hindi in that society right, Amit Shah?’

Ethnic Bengali stated, ‘Amit Shah : An era where English speakers feel ashamed is near.  Just because his Son isn’t fluent in English, should others feel the same ? And this is clear acceptance of Hindi imposition. Godi media was instructed to delete this video.’

Roshan Rai, Veena Jain and Anusha Ravi Sood shared a similar claim.

Fact Check

We began our fact-checking by conducting a reverse image search along with searching for material relevant to the claim. During our investigation, we found a video uploaded by Dainik Jagran on YouTube on June 19, 2025. In the video, Home Minister Amit Shah says, “In our lifetime, a day will come when those who speak in English will feel ashamed. The creation of such a society is inevitable. This goal can only be achieved with strong determination. I believe that Indian languages are the jewels of our culture and tradition. Without Indian languages, we are not truly Indian. To understand our nation, its history, culture, traditions, and religion—there is no better way than through Indian languages. Foreign languages cannot help us grasp the true depth of Indian-ness. One cannot truly understand India without understanding its languages. While this battle is difficult, I firmly believe that Indian society will prevail. With full pride, we will run our nation in Indian languages, conduct research in them, achieve results in them, and also lead the world through them. I have no doubt about this.”

Additionally, we found a Times of India article dated June 19, 2025, which reported that Shah made these remarks during the launch of the book Main Boond Swayam, Khud Sagar Hoon, authored by former IAS officer Ashutosh Agnihotri. The article noted that Shah emphasized the need for India to shed the remnants of colonial influence and embrace its native pride.
