Corona has again taken China under its grip. After battling COVID-19 for a while, the entire globe felt some relief, and life returned to normal. But now, according to some media reports, COVID cases are again increasing in China. It is being said that around one million people in China may die as a result of COVID in the following months. India and a few neighboring countries are on alert.
Amidst all the tension, a few media sources like the Kerala based news portal, Urban Affairs Kerala, and Gujarat headline reported that a new variant, BF.7, identified in an NRI lady, is a deadly variant, and the possibility of future fatalities has been expressed. They reported a substantial number of COVID-19 cases in the BF.7 variant in India.
We started our report with a keyword search for “new variant of BF.7 found in India.” As per the ANI report, the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) has stated that a 61-year-old woman arrived from America on September 11, 2022, and was found positive on September 18, 2022. She had taken three doses of the Pfizer vaccination and was treated in home isolation. She has entirely recovered, and no one in her vicinity has been infected with the new variant.
This is not the first BF.7 case recorded in India. According to a report in India Today, the Union Health Minister stated that four cases of the BF.7 form of Omicron had been discovered in India. Two patients were infected with Omicron BF.7 and BF.12 variants before. These people were treated in home isolation and have recovered completely. Aside from the NRI woman, a guy from Ahmedabad’s Gota region had also tested positive for BF.7.
So far, the country has only recorded four cases of BF.7 in Vadodara and Odisha. And these cases were detected not recently, but between July and November. No severe symptoms were found in the patients. They were kept in home isolation and totally recovered.
These media reports are misleading. Because the country is already on alert, such tweets and reports might lead people to believe that a new variant is deadly, causing panic and havoc among the people at this critical time.
