AAP false claims on PM Modi’s expenses

The recent conflict between AAP and BJP over “free revdi” does not seem to end. On July 17, 2022, the AAP’s official Twitter account posted an infographic criticizing PM Modi’s expenses. In their tweet, they took a jibe at PM Modi for getting a Mercedes Maybeach and two VVIP airplane and also took a dig at PM Modi’s kitchen expenses, clothing, sunglass, and pen purchases.

They made few claims:

  1. PM Modi bought aircraft worth RS 8,5000 crore
  2. PM Modi owns a suit worth RS 10 lakh
  3. The mushroom that PM Modi eats cost worth lakh

What we found in our research

According to our research, the aircraft is not PM Modi’s private or personal aircraft. It is an airplane that is used by PM Modi. The VVIP aircraft will be used by his successors.

As per the report of the BusinessToday. In and Free Press Journal the acquisition process began in 2011 even before PM Modi’s office term. Officials said that the two planes total cost for acquisition and refit has been estimated to be approximately Rs 8,400 crore.

A total of Rs 810.23 crore was allotted for the procurement of two new aircraft for Special Extra Section Flight (SESF) operations in the 2020 budget presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. In addition to the expected Rs 4,741.85 crore that the government provided in 2018/19 and 2019/20, this provision was made.

Whatever is being invested On PM Narendra Modi, is being invested on the PM of India, if the Plane is bought for Indian PM, it will go on to the successor, the future PMs, so misleading comments by any political parties on such investments doesn’t seem to be fair.

AAP’S official twitter handle while taking a dig at PM Modi’s suit which he wore on the occasion of US President Barack Obama’s second visit to India tried to imply that the suit was bought by PM Modi.

According to the Scroll. In report, Rameshkumar Bhikabhai Virani, director of the KARP Group, which manufactures and sells polished diamonds and diamond jewellery, told ANI that he sent PM Modi the suit as a gift. The Indian businessman who is a non-resident claimed to have given Modi the outfit as a “surprise.” Virani presented the suit as a surprise during Vibrant Gujrat Summit while inviting PM Modi to attend his son’s wedding.

Elucidating on amount of the suit, Virani said “People can say anything. I can confirm that what is being said about its cost is not the correct amount. My son does not have the guts to spend that kind of money or that amount.”

The claim that PM Modi eats mushroom worth lakh has been made in the past but there is no evidence or proof to back this claim.

According to Factly’s report, OBC leader and then-Congress candidate Alpesh Thakor made the following claims in 2017: “Modi consumes five mushrooms each day, each of which costs RS 80,000 and are imported from Taiwan. He was dark like me, but an imported mushroom made him fairer.”

A further RTI request revealed that PM Modi himself covers his food and clothing costs, therefore information regarding these outlays is unlikely to be made public unless he chooses to do so.

Hence, it is evident that the claims made by AAP party in their tweet is misleading. The fact that they removed the tweet after being called out makes it more evident.
