Fact Check

We began our fact-checking process by examining the viral graphic image circulating on social media. A reverse image search revealed that the same graphic was shared on X  in December 2024 by a page named The Report Hindi. The post was captioned, “West Bengal: Madan Kundu and Sagar Das arrested while planting a bomb near the railway line in Murshidabad. Bomb also recovered.”

Further investigation led us to a report published by The Wall on December 26, 2024, which stated that two fresh bombs had reportedly been recovered from railway tracks in Murshidabad, leading to a temporary suspension of train services. A large police force reached the site after being informed by local residents, who allegedly spotted two individuals placing objects on the tracks near Dafahat Chhatkata Para, adjacent to Nimtita Railway Station. The suspects were caught by locals while trying to flee and were handed over to the police. The report also named the arrested individuals as Madan Kundu and Sagar Das. The police launched an investigation to determine the motive behind their actions.

However, a report from Sangbad Pratidin, also published on December 26, 2024, presented a significantly different version of events. According to the report, the two arrested youths were under the influence of alcohol and had allegedly tried to spread panic by leaving a spherical object wrapped in black plastic near the railway tracks. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon near Nimtita Railway Station under the jurisdiction of Shamsherganj Police Station. Officers from the Railway and Suti Police Stations reached the spot after receiving a tip-off.

Upon investigation, police claimed that the object was not a bomb, but stones wrapped in plastic, seemingly intended to mimic an explosive device. As a precaution, train services between Dhulian Ganga Road Station and Jangipur Road Station were suspended temporarily.

Therefore, the claim that two RSS/BJP-affiliated youths attempted to plant bombs on railway tracks in Murshidabad during the recent violence is false. First, the incident occurred in December 2024 and is not connected to the recent communal violence in Murshidabad. Second, police investigations revealed that the two individuals were inebriated and had only attempted to create a bomb scare using stones—not actual explosives.

ClaimDuring the recent violence in Murshidabad, two youths affiliated with the BJP/RSS planted bombs near a railway line in the district.
Claimed by Surrender Rajput, Taj India, South Asia Chronicles, and others.
Fact CheckThe incident being referred to actually took place in December 2024 and is unrelated to the recent violence in Murshidabad. Moreover, no bomb was found, the two individuals involved were reportedly drunk and had attempted to create a bomb scare by wrapping stones in black plastic and placing them near the railway tracks.
