Fact Check

We began our fact-checking process by conducting a Google search using relevant keywords. Our search led us to a Times of India report published on January 29, 2025. The article stated, ‘A 20-year-old student from Bangladesh, studying at MS University, allegedly ended her life in her apartment in the Raopura area on Tuesday. The student, Mohana Mondal, a first-year pharmacy student, was living alone in Narmada Apartment.’

The article further said, According to the police, Mondal left a vague suicide note stating that she was taking this extreme step ‘because she wanted to.’ ‘She did not blame anyone for her death. We questioned her friends, but they have no idea why she took this step. It appears she was struggling with depression, but we are investigating further,’ said Inspector Kuldipsinh Jadhav of Raopura police station. Mondal arrived in Vadodara last year to pursue her studies in the pharmacy department. On Tuesday, she was scheduled to take an exam but failed to appear. Concerned by her absence, her friends later received a call from her parents, who were also trying to reach her.’

Times of India reported ahead, ‘Sensing something was wrong, her friends went to her apartment on Tuesday night. When she did not respond, they broke open the door and found her hanging.’

Additionally, we found an Indian Express report published on 29 January. The article said, ‘A 20-year-old woman from Bangladesh, a first-year student at the Faculty of Pharmacy at MS University in Vadodara, allegedly died by suicide on Tuesday.’

Indian express report said, ‘Assistant Commissioner of Police, Ashok Rathava, said, ‘The police teams rushed to the spot upon receiving information about the suicide of a Bangladeshi national studying at MS University. A case of accidental death has been filed at Raopura police station, and an investigation is ongoing. Her suicide note, which appears to be in her handwriting, mentions that no one is to be blamed for her decision!’ The post-mortem examination conducted on Wednesday confirmed that Mondal had died due to asphyxiation, likely from hanging.’

While her suicide note does not mention any specific reason for her decision, her friends informed the police that she had confided in them about feeling overwhelmed by academic pressure and struggling to cope with her studies. Additionally, she had missed her first exam earlier that day, which was conducted by the Faculty of Pharmacy.

Based on these reports, the claim that Mohana Mondal was raped and murdered is false. Evidence suggests that she died by suicide due to academic stress.
