A post claiming that a family in Nashik purchased a car using the Ladki Bahin allowance is going viral. The post states that Mr. Athavale, who works in a software firm, could have already bought a car, but this scheme helped him meet the monthly EMI requirement. There are three women in the family, aged 18-65 years, who are receiving the allowance money. Using that money, he purchased a Tata Nexon by making a down payment of Rs 1.85 lakh, with the remaining amount financed through a loan over 60 months.

The X handle Sandeep Nirvan wrote, “Ladki Behen Yojana has really helped Auto sector revival. The government may announce more of such schemes as upcoming elections in Uttar Pradesh, Tamilnadu and West Bengal.” (Archived link)

Fact Check

We ran a reverse image search of the viral image and found a Facebook post by Jal Kranti Group dated September 12, 2021, where we found the same visual. The caption of the post reads, “One more car added to the Jal Kranti family!” The tagged location in the post is Surat, Gujarat.

The Ladki Behen scheme, introduced by the Mahayuti government, was announced in June 2024 by the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Ajit Pawar, in his budget speech. According to a Business Today report, Ajit Pawar stated that the government is launching the Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin scheme. Under this initiative, all women will receive Rs 1500 per month. The scheme will be implemented from July 2024.

Following the huge response, the government expanded the scheme and eased the conditions for women to receive assistance, including extending the deadline from July 15, 2024, to August 31, 2024.

The visual seen in the viral image predates the announcement of the Ladki Bahin scheme in Maharashtra.

Apart from this, the viral post claims that the man worked as a software engineer and was capable of purchasing a car on his own. However, he still received help from the Ladki Bahin allowance to cover the monthly EMI. According to the criteria for Ladki Bahin scheme beneficiaries, the scheme cannot be misused in this way. One of the six criteria mentioned states that any family whose annual income exceeds Rs 2.50 lakh is not eligible for this scheme.
