The BJP shared a photo of Rahul Gandhi wearing a white Burberry t-shirt and displayed its price next to it with the caption “Bharat, dekho!”

In response, the Twitter handle of Congress Sevadal retaliated by taking a jibe at PM Modi’s suit that allegedly cost worth lakh.

Our team conducted research to check the verity of the claim made by Congress Sevadal, as it looked to be suspicious. With the help of the keyword search “PM Modi’s suit cost worth lakh”, we came across a report by India Today published in 2015. As per the report, a Gujarati NRI businessman reportedly said that he sent Prime Minister Modi the monogrammed, pinstriped black suit as a gift. The Gujarati NRI businessman said in an interview with ANI that he has gifted the suit to him (PM Modi) when he visited the recent Vibrant Gujarat summit. He presented the gift to him while inviting him to attend his son’s wedding on January 26.

The businessman further stated that PM Modi told him that he would donate or auction the gift and contribute the earnings to a charitable organization as soon as he received it.

Prime Minister Modi wore the suit while meeting then-President Barack Obama over “Chai Pe Charcha” in Delhi. The suit became a talking topic back that time too.

While searching through the archives, we came across the report by Firstpost. As per the article, the monogrammed pinstriped black suit gifted by the Gujarati NRI businessman had alone raised Rs 4.3Cr and was utilized to fund the Clean Ganga Mission.

In 2016, the suit entered the Guinness World of Book Records, for being the most expensive suit which was bought by Surat-based diamond trader Laljibai Tulsibai Patel on February 20, 2015.
