A photo circulating on social media platform X shows two individuals hanging onto the closed door of an Indian railway train. The image shows that, despite the closed door, the passengers have tied themselves with pieces of cloth, barely managing to hang on. The image is being widely shared as a critique of the Indian government and the railway system.
Chhattisgarh Congress Sevadal sharing the viral image wrote, “People are forced to travel in trains in a crowded manner. Their pain and helplessness are not visible to those sitting in the corridors of power. Those who were responsible for the travel arrangements are running away from their responsibilities and are just busy making reels. This situation is really shameful!”
यह हालात वाकई शर्मनाक हैं!" pic.twitter.com/Qubj04OxXe

The viral image was also shared by several other handles on X, including Dhruv Rathee Satire, Monika Singh, Ashraf Ali Idrisi, Chirag Patel, and Ajay Meena.
The Tarksheel Society on Facebook claimed, “When the closed doors of Janseva Express, which had arrived at platform number two of Ambala Cantonment railway station in Haryana, did not open, two passengers tied a piece of cloth firmly on the door handle and stood on the footrest. These two passengers tied their luggage and the cloth on the window and in the meantime the train started moving, but no passenger sitting in the bogie even tried to bring them inside. Just think why would they have even thought of hanging outside the closed door? If there was enough space in the general compartment, why would anyone risk his life?”

Fact Check
We began our fact-checking research by performing a reverse image search of the viral image. The search led us to a Facebook post dated November 1, 2019, by a user named Aditya Ranjan Thakur. In his post, he wrote: “Passengers don’t get space on trains; all trains are running full. Fares have been increased, yet Indian Railways remains in deficit. Why? Who will understand the struggles of rail passengers? How many railway stations have been handed over to private entities? The Railways is being gradually privatized, and the Railway Minister seems unwilling to face the reality.”
In conclusion, the viral image was last dated to November 2019, though it’s possible it may be from an earlier time. It is explicitly clear that this image is not recent and is at least five years old.
