Amid India’s remarkable achievement of effectively landing a spacecraft on the moon’s southern pole, an interesting incident transpired on August 27. Vivek K. Tripathi (Archive link), a user recognized as a journalist based on his profile description, posted a video on social media capturing a peculiar scene—a person leisurely walking along a road. The brief 45-second video commences with a visual reminiscent of steps taken in low gravity on the lunar surface. However, this illusion rapidly dissipates as an autorickshaw enters the frame, grounding the scenario in reality. The camera’s focus then shifts to reveal the road’s pockmarked surface, riddled with potholes.
Accompanying the video was a caption by the user, which read, “Our Kanpur is no less than the moon.” The assertion made by the user indicated that the video had been captured in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh.
Apart from that, the Dainik Bhaskar journalist, Raksha (Archive link), also shared the same video and wrote, “Our people of Kanpur are really very creative. At first, I thought it was actually a video of walking on the moon.”

In the initial phase of our investigation, we conducted keyframe extraction from the video and initiated a reverse image search. This search yielded numerous media articles detailing the unusual incident.
As highlighted in a report from the Economic Times under the title “Watch: Artist, dressed up as astronaut, ‘Moonwalks’ on potholes in Bengaluru,” the account discloses that in 2019 the artist and activist Baadal Nanjundaswamy ingeniously reenacted an astronaut’s walk on the moon’s cratered surface.
As per a separate report from The Indian Express, during the year 2019, around September 7 when Chandrayaan 2 was slated for a landing attempt on the moon’s southern region—unfortunately met with failure—Baadal Nanjundaswamy, employed a unique approach to spotlight the dire state of potholes in Bengaluru. He crafted an unconventional video wherein he acted as an astronaut traversing these potholes, mimicking a lunar surface, thus drawing attention to their severity.
Additionally, the same video was featured on the YouTube channel of News Nation, accompanied by a description stating that the footage originated from Bangalore.
Thus, the assertion that the individual dressed in a spacesuit walking along a road filled with potholes hails from Kanpur is misleading. The event occurred in 2019 and transpired in Bangalore.
