Amidst the UNSC council meeting, Home minister Amit Shah on December 13, 2022, said that India’s permanent seat in the UN security council was sacrificed because of Nehru’s love for China. However, some leftists didn’t like his claims and tried to defend Nehru on this matter.

One Twitter handle with the name Advaid tweeted that “From 1949 to 1972, Taiwan held the permanent seat in the UN Security Council, after 1972, it was given to China whereas Nehru died in 1964, so it has nothing to do with Nehru. To think that the US and the Soviets would together suggest a nation to the UN Permanent seat after the Korean war is laughable”, he added.

Apart from this, Congress supporter Ria also jumped the gun and tweeted “Mr @AmitShah seems to hallucinate like his favorite Kangana Ranaut. India was never offered a permanent seat in the UN Security Council”, she added.

During our research, we came across a report by Wilson Center. In the report, we found that India did get the offer of becoming a permanent member of the UNSC. However, Nehru refused the offer by saying accepting this offer would be bad from every point of view. It would be a clear affront to China and it would mean some kind of a break between India and China. He further added that because of many factors, India is entitled to a permanent seat in the security council, but we are not going in at the cost of China.

Moreover, here is another report published by DNA that shows, Nehru refused the permanent seat in the UN security council.

So, all these points prove that Nehru did get the offer of getting a permanent seat in the UNSC but he refused the offer as he doesn’t want to spoil India’s relations with China, which backfired India as China attacked India on October 20, 1962.
