The mega auction of 5G spectrum ended on Monday. Reliance Jio was at the forefront in this auction. A total of Rs 1,50,173 crore spectrum has been sold in the biggest spectrum auction ever. However, in the meantime, a newspaper article is going viral on social media. The purported article claims that there has been a record loss of Rs 2.8 lakh crore in the auction of 5G spectrum.

On August 3, 2022, Indian National Congress member Pankhuri Pathak shared the viral news story on her Twitter account and criticized the media for failing to cover the story. Even after fact checking the issue and she being herself the social media influencer shared the fake news without confirming the authenticity of the matter.

Fact Check

As the Time Group article seemed suspicious, we investigated through it and the truth turned out to be different. In order to know the whole truth, we looked through the Times of India’s e-paper from August 2, 2022, where we discovered an article on page no.17 similar to the one shown in the viral article. The article’s headline says “5G spectrum auction earn centre record RS 1.5 lakh crore.”

Further analysis of the two articles revealed that the viral article’s title was edited, but the article’s sub-headline and whole content remained the same as the original article.

Thus our analysis revealed that the original headline from the Time Of India’s article had been edited.
