4,341 Brahmins Securing Jobs With Fake ST Certificates Is Old News

A newspaper clipping is going viral on social media, which states, “4341 Brahmins are working in jobs using ST certificates.” According to the newspaper clip, individuals from the Ojha and Nayak tribes had obtained Scheduled Tribe (ST) caste certificates in Uttar Pradesh. As a result, 4,341 Brahmins (a higher caste) acquired ST certificates and secured government jobs. Following a complaint, the SC/ST Commission directed the Uttar Pradesh government to investigate the misuse of tribal rights and submit both soft and hard copies of the investigation report.

While sharing this newspaper clipping, Lakhan Meena wrote, “Shameful, when looting wasn’t enough, they even took away the rights of the tribals.” (Archived link)

In our fact-check research, we searched for keywords related to the news report and found several media reports. We came across the same news in a report by Jagran, but it was found that this news dates back to 2016.

According to this report, in 2014, the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes filed a complaint stating that individuals from the upper caste communities, Ojha and Nayak, had obtained fake Scheduled Tribe certificates and were employed across various districts in Uttar Pradesh.

The government had ordered that those holding fake ST certificates be identified, their certificates be canceled, and action be taken against them under relevant sections. In Basti district, 36 such individuals were found and their certificates were cancelled.

In conclusion, the news that 4,341 Brahmins obtained fake ST certificates to secure jobs is not recent but dates back to March 2016. This news is being shared as recent with misleading claim. In 2016, action was taken against those who had obtained fake ST certificates and were employed in Uttar Pradesh.
