A video from CNN featuring a news segment on women’s safety in India has recently gone viral. In the clip, a female journalist recalls an incident where she was molested by a mob near the Gateway of India in Mumbai while conducting an interview. Social media users are sharing the video claiming that the incident is recent and reflects the current state of women’s safety in India. However, our verification reveals that the video is old and unrelated to the present situation.
Julia Kendrik claimed, ‘Shocking — there was a rape attempt on a CNN reporter during a live TV show in India when the lights went out. I’m honestly shocked. If a woman isn’t safe even while presenting live on air, then who is?’
Journalist Swati Chaturvedi stated, ‘So so shameful a rape attempt, groping & clothes torn during a reporter doing a live in India. All women reporters in the field face this & it’s not OK. Act against this scum CMO Maharashtra.’
Tanmoy wrote, ‘This Is Utterly HORRIFIC. During a live CNN Broadcast in Mumbai, a Blackout unleashed pure chaos as Men allegedly Grabbed and S€xually Harassed CNN Female Reporter. Her desperate cries for help, captured on audio amid the pandemonium, are Chilling.’
Red Marker, Ragrey Shah, Waqar Ahmad and Karanbir Singh shared a similar claim.
We began our fact-checking process by performing a reverse image search of the viral video. The search led us to the same CNN segment, which was uploaded on CNN’s official YouTube channel on August 24, 2013. In the video, journalist and author Sunny Hundal speaks with CNN’s Sara Sidner about the increasing number of reported gang rapes in India.
During the report, CNN journalist Sara Sidner states that she served as CNN’s India correspondent for five years. Recalling a past experience, she describes how, during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks in 2008, she was conducting an interview when the lights suddenly went out. In that moment of chaos, she was groped, grabbed, and her clothes were torn. She had to physically fight back to escape the mob.
Therefore, the viral video in which a CNN journalist speaks about women’s safety in India is from 2013, and the incident she refers to actually occurred in 2008.
